[this is good] http://education.yahoo.net/degrees/articles/featured_8_careers_to_help_lower_your_stress_meter.html

And
this lovely article lists pastry chef as a low stress career!

Annie

Man! Whoever wrote that article was must have been pulling stuff out of their ass just to get the column out! That's the biggest load of BS! I noticed they also listed being a tech support person as being a low stress job.......say what??????

I'm actually happy that I am not a pastry chef, but a baker. I deal with bread, cookies, breakfast pastries..that kind of thing. I've been doing it for 10 years and still love it. Yes, it's hard work, and there are many days where I work my ass off for 10 hours straight without a break of any kind, and then come home and completely drop like the dead--but I still love it. Guess I'm a gluten for punishment.

I also work the night shift, which I love because it's just me and my music (unless I'm training an apprentice) and I don't have to deal with people (or customers!).

For the last 6 years I've been working for a decent company that strives to take care of their bakers. I've got very good benefits and a generous paid vacation package. Since it's graveyard, they have a hard time keeping bakers around and I've got good pay as a result (how does $15/hour sound?).

I also have a part time job baking for a small tea shop, which I love as it is an outlet for my creativity (and that pays pretty well at $12/hour for part time).

All in all, I've done pretty well. I've been able to finish my BA degree in Liberal Arts (I have an associates from a tech college for Culinary Arts), buy a car, and own a modest condo.

I don't need a lot to be happy and proud of my life, and a lot of people are surprised when I tell them that I *really* do like the work that I do.

I'm sure I'll drop dead from exhaustion by the time I'm 40, but hey, at least I had a good time!

Annie

"Gluten for punishment".....did you mean to type that? ha ha! Great play on words! I'm a "gluten for punishment" too......that's why I've been doing it for 18 years. The longer you do this kind of work you find that your gluten gets developed beyond capacity and can no longer hold in the gas. This offensive gas then gets released......in the form of my blog...........

I make $15 an hour too.....but where I live, it's not enough to pay the bills. If it weren't for the fact that I'm married and my husband I combine our salaries, I'd be livin' in a trailer somewhere near a nuclear power plant.

You are saying exactly what I say to people all of the time. You have to love the job to do it! It has to be your passion! the sweetestchef

Annie

Yep, it IS my passion, in that I'd rather be doing this than sitting behind a desk somewhere, or wearing a headset at a drive through window asking, "You want fries with that?"Passion is only half the equation though. Insanity is the other part. Who else works this hard for so little money? As I've heard many times, "If we were paid what we're worth, no one could afford to eat out anymore."
