Ok, so call me "old school", but this internet acronym thing is making me crazy!!!! I'm even one of those people who considers themselves "computer savvy", and perhaps even "geeky", but trying to stay on top of abbreviations for EVERYTHING is shorting out my brain.
Besides, I am one of those that are lovingly referred to on the internet as a "Spelling Nazi".....I just see internet acronyms as a lazy way to type something, and it makes for annoying reading because it's "code" that you have to
decipher and I don't want to decode things when I'm reading. If I wanted to decode things I'd be a freakin' detective!
Yeah yeah, I understand about abbreviations being more handy when text messaging and all that, and if you're doing a quickie message on a cell phone, when all you can use is your thumbs, using "CUL8R" is much easier than typing out "See you later", but if you're on a computer with a full fledged keyboard? C'mon. Just spell it out. Tell the world you're a literate human being that's over the age of 12. And stop with all the LOL's!!!!! Some people will use "LOL" at the end of every sentence like it's punctuation rather than conveying an emotion. I swear to god I had one friend who beat "LOL" to death. He'd type stuff like:
For cryin' out loud! In case he didn't know, "LOL" means "laugh (or laughing) out loud". If he had said these things to me face to face and was laughing out loud, I'd think he was psycho, or a complete retard. As it turns out, he WAS a complete retard, so it just goes to show you that you can't completely hide your true self on the internet......I had a terrible day! lol
My father had a heart attack...lol
The doctors don't give out much hope....lol
My mother is already making funeral arrangements....lol, oh, and I got fired! lol!
Note to people writing personal ads: Use "spell check". It'll improve your already slim chances.
Recently, I was completely stumped when I ran across the acronym, "SAHM". I finally found out it meant "Stay-at-home-Mom". Oh. Well, I guess that's me. I'm a "Stay-at-home-STEP-Mom" so I guess that makes me a SAHSM. And to go further, I'm an Outstanding-Really-Great-Stay-at-Home-Step-Mom, so that makes me a "ORGSAHSM"!!! Yeah, I meant to do that......!
I don't know. Maybe it's my own personal problem, but c'mon, let's score one for the literacy team, shall we?
Let's type real words and leave the acronyms to organizations, big business and government agencies. Until then,
I'll BRB.

I wholeheartedly agree! It's sad that the English language (probably all languages, really) get butchered by the overuse of acronyms. I'd like to see our nation's schools teach grammar once again. I edit a lot of writing in my job, and it never ceases to amaze me that less than half of people I edit for know how to use an apostrophe. Sigh...

I always wonder if people meant to write poor grammer, or if they just don't know any better.
I mean. I hate worse than just spelling errors, things like.
Since I got married, I be bless. ?? (I say..WTF!)
My latest problem has been that my B and D and V keys stick a little so sometimes I drop the v...
I think a lot of it is diminishing literacy...people are writing things that they hear....and what they hear isn't very correct. I'm the child of anEnglish professor...but I've been known to say allsort of Souhternisms...but I surely do not ever write in an email to my boss. "I'm fixin to start that ther project...."

I work in an office with masters students and Ph.D. professors. For such a high degree of education, I am appalled to find the lack of accuracy in grammar that goes around the office. Hello people, we have spell check on the computers for a reason! I think that people are in such a hurry and are so lazy that they do not proof ANYTHING anymore.
And please, do not get me started on the people that think they are "cutesy" by using internet slang and acronyms. grrrr. (thats the sound, by the way)

Thanks for all comments you guys! You know what's scary? My stepson is in high school and of course, he has to write papers for English class, History, Spanish, etc. I see the papers that he turns in and that are returned by the teacher after they have been graded. The thing that shocks me is that the teachers turn a blind eye to the bad penmanship, spelling and grammar errors, and just grade the papers on content. Especially the English papers! I find it appalling. When I was in school, no matter what class we had to write a paper in, they got downgraded for bad spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraphs, penmanship, and grammar....not to mention content. You could write the most brilliant thoughts in the world, but if you couldn't do it in the proper manner, the teacher would give you a "D" and tell you to do it over. That doesn't happen now! I can't believe it....what's happened to our schools?????
